Going to a combine this summer? Here is what you want to know ahead of time...

You will most likely not get a job at the end of a combine! You should still go.
About 2 years ago, I put together a video talking about a combine i was invited to. I was not coaching on the floor. I was up in the bleachers watching the players run up and down but could not see them handling a similar game style that is being run in my league. It really reduced the comparison I could do to the level and style I was coaching.
Yet, I got a good feel for the players who attended. But some camps will be like that and you might have only a few scouts watching. Yet - some camps, especially when it is COVID-19 era, are worth going even if that would be all the exposure you will get.
In this video (here is the link https://youtu.be/VU6IhzDPI3E ), I detail what are we the things one should ask prior to going and which questions they should ask the organizers. Furthermore, if you like what you heard in the organizers' pitch, I detailed the "to-do list" you want to go over while in the combine/exposure camp.
So I invite you to go ahead and watch the YouTube video and I encourage you to write down those 3 points that will help you gather information, learn more about the business and situate yourself better in the next time out.
Why is it so important?
Since most guys don't get a job at the end of a combine. You go out there, try to play your A-game, yet - you are looking to get other things.
First - measure yourself against others (shape, game intensity decision making and more).
Second - You want to network well. Not to ask for a job. Network out of real interest in others, and learn in the process how is their journey going. What was harder for them, what you should avoid and mainly stay focused on short-cuts and other nuggets of wisdom which did help them to shorten the process. most of the guys who read it, assuming in the summer of 2021, some guys that will attend a combine with you will have a 6 to 12 months gap in their resume. Back in the day that was awful. Now it’s super accepted. With this crazy year and a half (almost 2 years) we had, even 18 months gap... I mean it is not nothing to worry about but you can work around it. You can find a lower-level job in the right place and close that gap, then you can be ready for your next step-up assignment.
One more thought I wanted to share. Ask for the extra perks you will get at the camp. I know Andrew Fair does a credit improvement workshop.
We do Goal Setting and Basketball networking workshop so you will know here is that you are aiming to, and how to get there, as well as improve your basketball connections and will make it easier for you to study the league you want to get to and connect with the right people there.
So these are the 3 points I wanted to share with you and one bonus point for reading all the way to the end.
If you want to ask anything international basketball-related, please feel free.
Hope it helped.
I will see you are the rim.
To Your Success,
Coach Rangi
